First appearing around twenty years ago, Azilal rugs are named after the Azilal region in Béni Mellal-Khénifra, in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, where they are handwoven on traditional wooden looms.
These one-of-a-kind rugs stand out from all others with their strikingly colorful patterns set against an off-white background.
Azilal rugs reflect a thousand-year-old tradition and ancestral craftsmanship.
Each rug is a true work of art, unique, and a product of the weaver’s imagination, telling her own story to the world through her creations.
The weavers express their moods through abstract designs and Berber symbols featured in the rug. For example, the zigzag represents travel, pyramids symbolize belonging to a region, and inverted triangles represent celebrations.
These Berber rugs are made with sheep wool and cotton.
